Spring Equinox and the Cardinal Grand Cross

Yesterday we witnessed the beginning of spring! Hooray!!! Although we had a ‘light dusting’ of snow yesterday, and the temperatures are still dipping quite low … how glorious it is to watch the days get longer and the nights grow shorter. Many people tell me this is their favorite time of the year … and no wonder.

From the perspective of the Medicine Wheel, the Spring Equinox is the time of new life, new beginnings, new dreams, sunrise, rebirth … even new or fresh medicines. This is a time of balancing energies … like the balance of day and night. The equinox speaks of equal daylight hours and nighttime hours. The eastern portion of the Medicine Wheel represents the season of Spring. Moving around the Medicine Wheel, you can see we are moving away from the northern, winter portion where the nights are longer and meant for deep slumber. The dreams that we dreamed are now beginning to feel the infusion of the energies of spring. Where the warmth and brightness of the sun begin to draw us out of our slumber and awaken to the newness of the season.

The eastern gate of the Medicine Wheel represents the element air … and when I think of being in spring, I feel the crisp freshness of the springtime air of the morning, and the warming of the sun on my face. It is a time when the grasses, plants and trees begin to unfurl, drinking in the rains and remains of the melting snows. The eastern gate also holds the medicine of tobacco … our spiritual medicine used in our sacred pipe.

From an astrological view, we have also entered a very special and profound time called the Cardinal Grand Cross. I am by no means an expert on astrology, however when the energies of the Universe become intense, conflicted or other wise charged, I turn to those who know and understand these shifts and changes for insight into what is happening.

For those of you who do not know about Grand Crosses … they occur whenever 4 planets align themselves in a square … where 4 planets are 90 degrees apart from each other and is composed of 2 oppositions. In other words, you have 2 sets of 2 opposing planets facing off, creating a square, and from each point of the square, you can create a large ‘X’ inside the square. The 4-legged Cardinal Grand Cross is a very rare occurrence that astrologers have been waiting quite some time for!

The Cardinal Grand Cross consists of the 4 Cardinal Signs and their associated planets. These are … Jupiter in Cancer, representing home life; Uranus in Aries, representing self-identity; Pluto in Capricorn, representing work; and, Mars in Libra, representing relationships. These planets have been moving into position since the end of 2013, however the closer they align themselves, or get to their exact degree of each other, the more intense their life altering energies will be felt.

Remember back about 18 months ago I started sensing some energetic changes taking place? I talked about the energies of 2012 and the Age of Aquarius. Since that time I have been encouraging you to look closely at your life, transform those areas you no longer want and embrace the opportunity of change. At the beginning of this month I wrote about ‘moving forward’ and totally engaging in your goals. Over the next 6 weeks or so, the extraordinary energy from this Cardinal Grand Cross will be challenging you to initiate and see through those changes you have been seeking these past 18 months. It will pressure you into being mindful and responsive to those areas you are most vulnerable or weakest, internally and externally. If your health is at risk … it will be intensified. If you have old fears or self-esteem issues, you will be presented with opportunities to heal those wounds and move forward in your life more confident and less fearful.

This is the Age of Aquarius … and the Cardinal Grand Cross will bring plenty of opportunities for us to make changes in our lives … it is up to us to decide how we want to use and handle these energies. Becoming aware of various patterns in your life … those you created and those handed down to you … that are no longer serving you or your best interest gives you the opportunity to make those changes needed to create a better life for yourself and a better you.

The opposition of the planets brings that same kind of energy into your life … in the areas of work, relationships, home, and your identity. These four areas are often thought to be the building blocks of our lives … and are tightly bound together. If you have been working at the same job or in the same field for many years, a change in that area of your life can solicit challenges in your relationships, identity and in your home. The challenges and changes this energy can bring into your life is powerful.

If you have one of these Cardinal signs in your astrological chart, you may be more susceptible to the influences of this energy than someone who does not. These cardinal signs effect and initiate new energies in our growth and development. They help to move us towards our own unique and personal selves … helping us expand into our full potential.

Sunday, March 30th brings us the added energy of a New Moon. Like all New Moons, this is a great time to initiate activity to support your dreams and future goals. New Moons bring new beginnings … the end of the old cycle is completed and the initiation of a new cycle is underway. The New Moon is the initiator of all that will take place in April … the growth of the intensity of energy from the Cardinal Grand Cross, and the energies from 2 eclipses.

Yes … we have the added bonus of a Lunar eclipse on April 15th, and a Solar eclipse on April 29th, about the time the Cardinal Grand Cross energies begin to wane. You can expect shifts in your emotional energies during the eclipses. Like with any Lunar eclipse, you know that it is a time of new beginnings, endings, and major changes. However, when you couple it with the energies from the Cardinal Grand Cross … it exaggerates the ‘usual’. During a Lunar eclipse your emotions may run a muck, causing anxiety, upsets and other extraordinary sentiment. All eclipses signify change. A Solar eclipse usually indicates changes in your external world … the material aspect of your world. For example, while it is representative of new beginnings, you may find yourself starting a new project or feeling anxious about an impending deadline. Again … couple that with the energies of Cardinal Grand Cross … and it will be intensified.

I like to think of this time as the apex of a 3-year cycle of change. As I mentioned earlier, 18-months ago we were talking about the ending of the Mayan calendar, the start of the Age of Aquarius, and the shifting, changing energies. We have reached the pinnacle … but the waves of change are fierce and forceful, pushing you to depths you need to experience, and heights of greater potential. How you choose to handle these ‘winds of change’, these volatile times of growth, health and healing is up to you. Once the month of May is upon us, we will begin to experience a sense of gentleness … the waves will lose their fierceness, and the power behind the winds will slacken as we continue to move through the rest of the year, into and through the year 2015.

How gentle and calm the waves and winds will become, again, is up to you. But, if you are excited about the possibility of change … in your relationships, work, home and self-identity … hang on tight and enjoy the adventure, revel in the excitement and emotion, and let the winds of change blow through you, your psyche, and your world.

  1. This is one of the best missives you have put out. You must be really intune with the environment. Thanks Gayle, that was very good!
